Edgebander Hot Air Blower Nozzle Alignment

Ensure consistent glue activation and prevent scorching by precisely aligning the hot air blower nozzles on single- and double-sided edgebanders. This procedure eliminates uneven heating, glue degradation, and band misalignment caused by misdirected hot air streams.

Purpose

To provide a standardized procedure for checking, adjusting, and securing the hot air blower nozzle bank on the pre-melting unit and glue applicator section of industrial edgebanders. Correct alignment within ±0.5 mm of the reference edge prevents uneven glue activation, reduces the risk of scorching due to obstructed airflow, and ensures a consistent bond line across all panel thicknesses.

Scope

Applicable to all SCM, Biesse, Homag, and Brandt edgebanders equipped with a hot air blower pre-heating station. This procedure covers nozzle bank vertical and horizontal offset adjustment, angular tilt correction relative to the panel edge, and air slot cleaning. Machines with infrared pre-heating or cold glue systems are excluded from this procedure.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTODe-energize and lock out the main electrical disconnect upstream of the machine controller. Verify zero power state with a phase rotation tester or voltmeter no-load (NL) before accessing the nozzle bank.
  • PPEHeavy-duty heat-resistant gloves (EN 407 Class III), faceshield for hot particulate, and safety footwear with metatarsal guard are mandatory during nozzle handling and cleaning.
  • HOTAllow the blower unit and ceramic diffusers to cool for a minimum of 10 minutes or force-cool with compressed air before handling. Surface temperatures can exceed 200 °C immediately after shutdown.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Feeler gauge set (0.5 mm to 3.0 mm)
  • Laser alignment tool or digital protractor (0.1° resolution)
  • Stainless steel wire brush (fine) or brass brush for cleaning
  • Hex key set (metric) — 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm
  • Torx T20 and T25 drivers
  • Heat-resistant anti-seize compound (nickel-based)
  • Torque wrench (2 Nm to 10 Nm range)
  • Flashlight for visual inspection of air slots
  • Manufacturer alignment fixture (optional, specific to Homag)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Isolation & Cooldown: Perform full lockout/tagout (LOTO) on the edgebander main disconnect. Place a personal danger tag. Wait a minimum of 10 minutes for the heating elements and ceramic diffusers to drop below 40 °C before opening the hood.
2 Access & Inspection: Remove the lower dust extraction hood and the front guard panel of the pre-melting station. Visually inspect the nozzle bank for carbon buildup, physical warping, or cracks. Document any signs of thermal damage.
3 Laser Reference Setup: Attach a laser alignment tool to the machine table or the glue pot reference edge. Align the projected laser line exactly parallel to the panel feed direction. This establishes the zero line for all gap and tilt measurements.
4 Horizontal (Gap) Adjustment: Loosen the M6 lock nuts securing the nozzle bank bracket. Insert a 1.5 mm feeler gauge between the nozzle face and the panel edge reference line. Adjust the bracket until there is a light drag on the gauge. Tighten the lock nuts to 8 Nm.
5 Vertical (Height) & Angular Adjustment: Using a digital protractor, set the vertical tilt to 2–3 degrees downwards towards the glue line. Verify the entire nozzle slot is parallel to the panel edge. Check with a feeler gauge at both the front and back of the nozzle. Adjust the set screws as needed to achieve uniform contact.
6 Flow Path Verification: Visually trace the hot air path using a flashlight. Ensure there are no obstructions (chips, solidified glue dams) blocking the air slots on the top and bottom nozzle plates. Clean gently with a brass brush if any debris is found.
7 Anti-Seize Application: Apply a thin, even film of nickel-based anti-seize compound to the threads of the adjusting bolts and the sliding contact surfaces of the mounting bracket. This prevents galling during the next adjustment cycle.
8 Reassembly & Test: Reinstall the lower dust hood and front guard. Remove all LOTO tags and re-energize the machine. Perform a dry run of the heating cycle. Monitor the air temperature at the nozzle outlet for consistency (± 5 °C of setpoint). Verify the glue line activation on a test panel before resuming production.
