Dust Collection Ductwork Leak and Static Pressure Check
This procedure ensures that dust collection ductwork is free of air leaks and that static pressure readings meet design specifications. Regular checks prevent fugitive dust, reduce fan energy consumption, and maintain capture velocity at hoods.
The primary purpose of this standard operating procedure is to methodically inspect dust collection ductwork for air leaks and to measure static pressure at key points in the system. By identifying and sealing leaks and comparing static pressure readings against design values, maintenance personnel can restore system efficiency, reduce combustible dust hazards, and prolong the life of the fan and collection equipment.
This procedure applies to all metal, PVC, or flex ductwork used in industrial dust collection systems (including cyclone, baghouse, and cartridge collector configurations). It covers visual inspection, leak detection using smoke or soap solution, and static pressure measurement with a digital manometer. This SOP does not cover structural repairs of ducts or replacement of major components. It is intended for maintenance personnel, millwrights, and industrial ventilation technicians.
- Perform lockout/tagout on the dust collector fan motor and any airlocks before opening access panels or drilling test ports. Verify zero energy state with a voltage tester.
- Wear safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection. If working at height, use a ladder or manlift and secure tools to prevent drops. Dust masks required if residual dust is disturbed.
- Ensure the work area is free of combustible dust accumulations. Use grounded tools and avoid any ignition sources. If duct contains combustible metal dust, follow additional NFPA 484 precautions.
- Do not enter any confined spaces without proper atmospheric testing and a confined space permit. Only perform external ductwork inspection.
- Digital manometer (inclined or magnehelic type) with hose and static pressure tips
- Smoke pencil or incense stick for airflow visualization
- Leak detection spray (soapy water in spray bottle) or hand‑held ultrasonic leak detector
- Aluminum foil duct tape (UL‑181 or equivalent) for temporary sealing
- Step ladder or scaffolding for access to overhead ductwork
- Marker, notebook, and camera for documentation
- Drill and ¼‑inch bit (if test ports are absent)
- Personal protective equipment (safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, dust mask)
