Purpose

To standardize the application of a release agent to vacuum forming membranes. This procedure eliminates guesswork, reduces the risk of parts fusing to the membrane, and extends membrane life by preventing chemical degradation from improper agent buildup or incomplete curing.

Scope

This procedure is mandatory for all thermoforming presses equipped with a silicone or rubber membrane system. It applies during preventive maintenance (PM) cycles, tooling changeovers, and pre-production setup for polyurethane or composite layup processes. Operators and maintenance technicians must adhere to this standard. Any deviation requires supervisor approval and a documented risk assessment.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the thermoforming press and isolate pneumatic/hydraulic power supplies before accessing the membrane or tooling area.
  • PPEWear nitrile gloves to prevent skin contact with releasing agents (may contain isocyanates or silicones). Safety glasses are mandatory. If using a solvent-based release agent, ensure adequate local exhaust ventilation (LEV) or wear a NIOSH-approved organic vapor respirator.
  • FIREReleasing agents and cleaning solvents are often flammable. Keep all ignition sources (heat guns, sparks, open flames) away from the work area until the applied coats have fully flashed off and cured.

  • Vacuum forming release agent (e.g., Zyvax, Marbocote, or per tooling specification)
  • Cleaning solvent (Naphtha, Isopropyl Alcohol, or Acetone)
  • Hand-pump sprayer or dedicated HVLP spray gun
  • Heat gun with adjustable temperature control (low setting, ~50°C)
  • Vacuum gauge (to verify seal integrity before application)
  • Catch bottle for excess solvent/agent

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout & Access: Complete LOTO on the forming machine. Remove safety guarding. Retract the heater box and lower the clamping frame to expose the membrane. Visually inspect the membrane for tears, pinholes, or delamination. Document any defects before proceeding.
2 Mechanical Cleaning: Saturate a clean, lint-free wipe with the appropriate cleaning solvent. Wipe the entire membrane surface using firm, overlapping passes in one direction to lift residual plastic, dust, and old release agent. Allow the solvent to flash dry for a minimum of 2 minutes.
3 Release Agent Preparation: Shake the release agent container vigorously for 30 seconds to ensure a homogenous suspension. Transfer the agent to a clean hand-pump sprayer or HVLP gun. Adjust the nozzle to produce a fine, even mist pattern.
4 Sealer Coat Application (Base Layer): Hold the applicator 8–12 inches from the membrane surface. Apply a thin, uniform mist coat using a steady sweeping motion. Do not saturate. Allow the solvent carrier to flash off for 60–90 seconds until the surface is tack-free.
5 Top Coat(s) Application: Apply 1–2 additional mist coats using the same technique, overlapping each pass by 50%. Wait 60–90 seconds between coats. The final film should be continuous but visibly thin—optical clarity indicates proper film thickness. Excessive buildup leads to peeling and contamination.
6 Quality Verification (Visual:) Inspect the membrane under direct lighting. The surface must exhibit a uniform, satin-like finish. Reject and re-apply if streaks, runs, pinholes, or dry spots are observed.
7 Thermal Curing (If Specified): If the release agent manufacturer specifies a heat cure, use a heat gun set to low (~50°C) to gently warm the membrane. Move the heat gun continuously to avoid localized overheating. Maintain the surface at the specified temperature for the duration recommended in the TDS.
8 Reassembly & Documentation: Lower the clamping frame. Reinstall safety guarding. Remove LOTO from the press. Record the application in the machine's maintenance log, including date, operator initials, release agent batch number, and any observed membrane condition anomalies.
