Dust Collector Bag Cage Inspection For Bending
This procedure outlines the critical steps for safely and effectively inspecting dust collector bag cages for bending, corrosion, and structural fatigue. Regular inspection prevents media chafing, premature bag failure, and emission violations.
To provide a standardized method for inspecting dust collector bag cages (internal wire retainers) to detect bending, rust, weld failure, or distortion that could compromise filter bag integrity, system pressure drop, and emission compliance.
This SOP applies to all pulse-jet, reverse-air, and shaker-style dust collectors utilizing wire mesh cages to support filter bags. It covers visual and dimensional inspection criteria during scheduled PM outages, change-outs, or troubleshooting events. Operators and maintenance technicians must follow this procedure.
- Complete lockout/tagout of the dust collector, including fan motor, rotary airlock, and compressed air supply. Verify zero energy state before opening access doors.
- Wear N95 or P100 respirator, safety glasses, hearing protection, and puncture-resistant gloves. If hazardous dust (silica, metal fumes) is present, use full Tyvek suit and supplied-air respirator.
- If entering the hopper or clean air plenum, follow confined space entry protocol per local regulations. Have a dedicated attendant and continuous gas monitoring.
- High-lumen flashlight (rechargeable)
- Digital caliper or cage diameter template
- Telescoping inspection mirror
- Writeable zip-tie inspection tags
- Replacement bag cages (as needed)
- PPE as per Safety Precautions section
- Camera or tablet for documentation
