Purpose

To establish a standardized method for checking and adjusting chain tension on rotary valve drives used in dust collection systems. Correct chain tension reduces sprocket tooth wear, prevents slack‑induced chain jump, and minimizes downtime from drive‑train failures.

Scope

This procedure applies to all industrial dust collector rotary valve assemblies driven by roller chain or leaf chain. It covers scheduled inspections (every 500 operating hours or quarterly) and corrective adjustments. It does not cover chain replacement, sprocket alignment, or lubrication steps – those are covered in separate SOPs.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the dust collector motor and airlock drive at the disconnect. Verify zero energy state with a voltmeter or by attempting a manual start – never rely on a single power‑ off.
  • PPEWear ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses, ANSI cut‑level 4 gloves, and hearing protection when guards are removed and during tensioning.
  • PINCHKeep hands clear of rotating sprockets and chain path – use a pry bar to move the motor base. Never insert fingers into the chain‑sprocket interface while tensioning.
  • ENTBefore re‑energizing, ensure all guards are correctly reinstalled and fasteners torqued. A flying chain segment can cause severe injury.

  • Lockout/tagout kit with padlocks, hasps, danger tags
  • Drop‑forged chain breaker (for master link removal if needed)
  • Chain tension gauge or combination square with feeler gauge set
  • Adjustable wrench / socket set (metric or imperial to match motor base bolts)
  • Torque wrench (capable of fastener spec)
  • Pry bar (approx. 24″) for sliding motor base
  • Goggles, cut‑level 4 gloves, hearing protection
  • Manufacturer’s manual for chain type and tension specification

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Perform lockout/tagout on the dust collector motor and airlock drive. Tag out the disconnect and verify zero energy by attempting a start. Keep the key on your person.
2 Remove the drive guard covering the chain and sprockets. Inspect guard for cracks, dents, or missing fasteners – replace if compromised. Set guard aside.
3 Visually inspect the chain: look for elongation (shiny pins / bushing wear), stiff links, rust pitting, or missing cotter pins on master links. Measure chain sag at mid‑span using a straight edge – record deflection in millimetres.
4 If deflection exceeds manufacturer spec (typically 1–2% of centre‑distance): loosen motor baseplate bolts (do not remove). Use a pry bar to slide the motor away from the rotary valve shaft. Tension incrementally – never tighten more than 3 mm per adjustment.
5 Continue adjusting until deflection is within spec. Torque the baseplate bolts to the value listed in the motor manual. Re‑check chain deflection – equal tension across both strand runs is critical.
6 Rotate the valve by hand two full revolutions – feel for binding or rough spots. Listen for rubbing. Verify chain does not contact the guard or frame.
7 Reinstall the drive guard, tighten all fasteners. Remove lockout/tagout locks and tags. Re‑energize the system. Run one complete cycle and listen for chain slapping, squealing, or abnormal vibration.
8 Record the following in the maintenance log: date, chain condition (good/fair/poor), deflection measurement (mm), any parts replaced (e.g., master link), and technician initials.
