Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to establish a standardized method for measuring the laser preheating power on edgebanders to verify the laser output remains within manufacturer specifications (±5% of nominal power). Consistent power ensures proper preheating of the glue line, prevents cold glue joints, and avoids overheating that can damage the edgeband or machine components.

Scope

This procedure applies to all CNC edgebanders equipped with a laser preheating unit (e.g., Homag, Biesse, SCM, and similar models) that utilize a CO₂ or diode laser for preheating the workpiece edge before glue application. It covers the use of a calibrated laser power meter, alignment checks, and safety interlocks. This SOP does not cover routine cleaning or alignment of the laser optics; refer to SOP-EL-200 for optical maintenance.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the edgebander main electrical disconnect and isolate the laser power supply. Verify zero energy using a non-contact voltage tester before accessing the laser compartment.
  • PPEWear laser safety eyewear rated for the specific laser wavelength (e.g., 10.6 µm CO₂ or 940 nm diode) and a Class 4 laser hazard zone sign must be posted. Additionally, wear cut-resistant gloves to handle sharp edgeband materials.

  • Calibrated laser power meter (e.g., Ophir StarBright with thermal sensor head, 0–200 W continuous, NIST traceable)
  • Laser safety glasses (OD 4+ at applicable wavelength)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Ensure lockout/tagout is applied at the main electrical disconnect. Remove the laser access panel using the correct key or tool.
2 Connect the laser power meter sensor head to the meter. Place the sensor head at the laser output aperture, maintaining the distance and alignment specified by the meter manufacturer (typically 10–15 mm from the aperture).
3 Remove LOTO tags and restore power. Activate the laser in test mode via the machine’s service menu. Run the laser at the nominal power setting (e.g., 80 W or as per manufacturer spec).
4 Wait 10 seconds for the meter reading to stabilize. Record the steady-state power reading displayed on the meter.
5 Compare the measured power to the machine’s nominal specification. If deviation exceeds ±5%, proceed to troubleshooting SOP-EL-400. If within tolerance, document the result.
6 Shut down the laser, reapply LOTO, disconnect the power meter, and securely reinstall the access panel. Complete the maintenance log entry with the measured power, date, and technician ID.
