Purpose

To remove accumulated resin, pitch, and debris from the blade flange and to verify that the flange and blade runout remain within manufacturer tolerances. This prevents excessive vibration, blade damage, and poor cut quality.

Scope

This procedure applies to all beam saws with a single or multiple blade arbor system used in woodworking, panel processing, and building product manufacturing. It covers both the arbor flange (inner and outer) and the blade itself. This procedure should be performed at each blade change and as part of a quarterly preventive maintenance schedule.

  • LOTOComplete lockout/tagout of the main power supply before accessing the blade area. Verify zero energy with a qualified electrician.
  • PPEWear cut‑resistant gloves (level 5 or higher), safety glasses, and hearing protection. Use a dust mask when cleaning resin deposits.

  • Soft mallet (plastic or rubber)
  • Blade flange cleaning tool (plastic scraper or fine abrasive pad)
  • Manufacturer’s service manual for torque and runout specifications

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Perform lockout/tagout (LOTO) per facility procedure. Disconnect main power and verify zero energy with a qualified electrician.
2 Remove the blade guard assembly using the appropriate hex key. Store all fasteners in a labelled container.
3 Carefully remove the blade. Use cut‑resistant gloves. Support the blade with both hands and place it on a clean, padded surface.
4 Inspect both flange faces (arbor and clamping flange). Clean off residual pitch, resin, or metal shavings using solvent and the cleaning tool. Wipe dry with lint‑free rags.
5 Mount the dial indicator on a rigid fixture or the saw arbor housing. Position the stylus on the flange face approximately 5 mm from the outer edge. Rotate the arbor by hand and record the maximum deviation. Compare to the manufacturer’s runout specification (typically ≤ 0.05 mm).
6 If runout exceeds tolerance, clean the flange again and re‑measure. If still out of spec, inspect for burrs, nicks, or corrosion on the flange seat. Dress the flange with fine abrasive if damage is minor; replace flange if damage is severe.
7 Reinstall the blade, ensuring the rotation direction arrow matches the saw’s rotation. Tighten the clamping bolts in a criss‑cross pattern to the manufacturer’s torque value (e.g., 45 N·m).
8 Re‑check blade runout with the dial indicator on the blade body (approximately 10 mm from the tips). Acceptable total indicator reading (TIR) ≤ 0.08 mm. If excessive, re‑torque or inspect blade for warpage.
9 Reinstall the blade guard, remove all LOTO devices, and perform a test cut on scrap material. Verify cut quality, listen for abnormal vibration, and document readings in the PM log.
