Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to standardize the receiving, storage, inventory tracking, and rotation of edgebanding rolls. Proper storage prevents adhesive pre‑curing, moisture absorption, and mechanical damage. A barcode‑based inventory system ensures that every roll is traceable to its batch, adhesive type, color, width, and thickness, enabling first‑in‑first‑out (FIFO) usage and accurate stock counts. This reduces production downtime, material waste, and rework caused by degraded or misplaced edgebanding.

Scope

This procedure applies to all edgebanding rolls in the facility, including PVC, ABS, PP, and wood‑veneer tapes with pre‑applied hot‑melt or PU adhesives. It covers initial receiving inspection, location assignment in the storage rack, FIFO placement, weekly condition audits, picking, partial‑roll handling, and end‑of‑life disposal. Operators, material handlers, and inventory clerks are responsible for following each step. This SOP is part of the facility’s overall material management system and integrates with the CMMS (ServiceGrid) for digital tracking.

Safety Precautions
  • ERGUse proper lifting technique when handling rolls over 20 kg. Use a roll cart or hoist for bulk rolls. Edgebanding rolls can slide; always secure both ends when moving.
  • CUTWear cut‑resistant gloves and safety glasses when cutting foil or tape to open rolls. Blades must be stored in a locked holder when not in use.
  • PPEMaterial handlers must wear steel‑toe boots and high‑visibility vests to prevent foot and pinch‑point injuries in the storage aisle.
  • FIREStore edgebanding rolls away from open flames, welding areas, and high‑heat sources. Adhesive materials are flammable; maintain a clear fire extinguisher access.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Barcode scanner or mobile device with inventory app (e.g., ServiceGrid mobile)
  • Roll‑end identification tags (waterproof, adhesive‑backed)
  • Heavy‑duty rack shelving with dividers (upright storage to prevent roll crush)
  • Temperature / humidity data logger (recommended range: 18–25 °C, <60% RH)
  • Wide poly tape (for sealing partially used rolls)
  • Roll cart or pallet jack
  • Cutter knife with retractable blade (type: safety hook style)
  • Personal protective equipment (cut‑resistant gloves, safety glasses, steel‑toe boots)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Receive & Inspect. Upon delivery, examine each edgebanding roll for damage, water stains, or signs of adhesive oozing. Verify the roll label matches the packing slip (adhesive type, color, width, thickness, batch). Record the receiving date and assign a unique roll ID in the inventory system.
2 Assign Storage Location. Create a location code using the format Zone–Rack–Shelf–Position (e.g., A-3-12LH). Attach a laminated location label to the shelf. Update the inventory system so that the roll ID is linked to that location.
3 Place Roll Upright. Stand the roll vertically on its core end with the tail end secured by a tag. Use shelf dividers to prevent rolls from leaning or crushing each other. For very wide rolls (>60 mm), place them horizontally on dedicated cradles to avoid core deformation.
4 Implement FIFO Rotation. When adding new rolls of an existing SKU, place the new rolls behind or below the existing ones. In a vertical rack, always add to the back of the same shelf slot. In a horizontal cradle, stack new on bottom. Update the system placement date accordingly.
5 Conduct Weekly Condition Audit. Every Monday, inspect all edgebanding rolls for adhesive tackiness, color fading, or edge damage. Note any roll with compromised packaging. Measure and log ambient temperature and humidity. If conditions exceed 25 °C or 60% RH for more than 8 hours, initiate a corrective action and move rolls to controlled storage.
6 Pick and Partial Roll Handling. When pulling a roll, scan the location barcode and roll barcode into ServiceGrid. Confirm the material matches the work order. For partial rolls, after cutting the desired length, immediately seal the cut edge with two wraps of wide poly tape and re‑tag with roll ID, remaining length, and date. Re‑scan and update remaining inventory in the system.
7 End-of-Life Disposal. When a roll core is empty or any roll shows adhesive failure, mark it as "scrap" in the inventory system. Remove the roll from storage and dispose of it according to local waste regulations for thermoplastic materials. Update the location record as vacant.
