Purpose

This procedure ensures the paint shaker's automatic timer circuit delivers the programmed mixing duration within ±0.5 seconds of the set value. Accurate timer calibration is critical for maintaining batch consistency, preventing over-mixing that aerates the paint, and avoiding incomplete mixing that leaves unmilked pigment at the can bottom.

Scope

Applies to all pneumatic paint shakers Model PS-500 (serial numbers 2000–4000) installed in the mixing bay. This procedure is intended for maintenance technicians and shift supervisors. It covers timer setting via the on‑board potentiometer, validation using an external stopwatch, and documentation per the facility's calibration schedule.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the pneumatic supply at the main ball valve before accessing the timer module. Do not rely solely on the machine's stop button.
  • PPEWear safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1), hearing protection (since shaker can reach 85 dBA), and nitrile gloves when handling the control panel cover (sharp edges).
  • PINCHKeep hands clear of the shaker clamp mechanism. The spring-loaded clamp can snap closed unexpectedly even after air is disconnected.

  • Hex key set (3 mm for timer potentiometer, 4 mm for panel screws)
  • Digital stopwatch (certified ±0.01 s resolution)
  • Pressure gauge (0–10 bar, calibrated)
  • Torque wrench (5 N·m for M4 cover screws)
  • Calibration log sheet (polymer paper for solvent resistance)
  • Personal lockout/tagout kit (padlock, hasp, danger tag)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout-Tagout Pneumatic Supply. Close the main ½‑inch ball valve feeding the shaker. Apply a personal padlock and danger tag to the valve handle in accordance with facility LOTO policy. Verify zero air pressure by opening the moisture drain cock – no hissing sound confirms isolation.
2 Release Residual Pressure. Actuate the red manual pressure release valve (located beside the air inlet) until the pressure gauge reads 0 bar. Disconnect the quick-connect air line to confirm the line is depressurized.
3 Access Timer Module. Using the 4 mm hex key, remove the four M4×12 cover screws. Set the torque wrench to 5 N·m and loosen in a star pattern. Lift the metallic control panel cover – be cautious of the grounding wire tether. Locate the timer PCB on the east side of the enclosure; the trim pot is labelled R25.
4 Set Desired Mixing Time. Refer to the calibration chart inside the cover. For 1 L cans: turn R25 clockwise to increase time (target 30 s). For 3.8 L: 60 s. Use the 3 mm hex key to make fine adjustments (one quarter turn ≈ 2 seconds). Do not force beyond mechanical stops.
5 Validate Timer with Stopwatch. Temporarily re-connect the air supply (bypass LOTO only for this step). Press the shaker's green start button and simultaneously start the digital stopwatch. Let the machine run through its full cycle. Record the actual run time. If deviation exceeds ±0.5 s, adjust R25 and repeat this step.
6 Reconnect and Test Cycle. After validation, remove LOTO and fully restore pneumatic supply. With a 1‑litre water-filled test can, run three complete cycles. Observe that the timer shuts off at the programmed time ±0.5 s each time. Listen for unusual bearing or valve sounds.
7 Document in Calibration Log. Write the date, technician name, set time, validated time, and any adjustments made on the calibration log sheet. Apply a new calibration sticker to the machine panel near the timer label (green dot for pass, red for out-of-tolerance).
