Pu Foam Gasket Application Thickness Check
A metrological standard for verifying the compressed thickness of field-applied polyurethane (PU) foam gaskets on process flanges. Correct thickness directly correlates to seating stress, blowout resistance, and service life per ASME PCC-1 guidelines.
To establish a repeatable metrological standard for verifying the compressed thickness of applied polyurethane (PU) foam gaskets on process equipment flanges. A correctly sized and cured foam gasket ensures uniform seating stress, prevents fugitive emissions, and maximizes blowout resistance over the full service life of the joint. This SOP aligns with the torque and assembly requirements of ASME PCC-1.
This procedure applies to all field-fabricated polyurethane foam gaskets installed on ANSI class 150–900 flanges in hydrocarbon, chemical, and utility service. It is intended for Instrument & Controls technicians and millwrights performing break-in maintenance or turnaround assembly. Pre-formed elastomeric gaskets, spiral-wound gaskets, and PTFE envelope gaskets are explicitly excluded.
- Lockout/Tagout: Verify zero energy state and isolation for any flange breaking, spreading, or assembly work. Do not rely on closed valves alone.
- Chemical Hazard: Polyurethane components contain isocyanates. Wear nitrile or Viton gloves, indirect-vent safety glasses, and a full-face respirator if ventilation is inadequate. Review SDS before handling.
- Pinch Point Hazard: Use approved flange spreaders and handling tools. Never insert hands or fingers between unsupported or moving flange faces.
- Thermal Hazard: Allow flanges and process piping to cool below 40°C before application. Hot surfaces degrade the foam cure chemistry and reduce final gasket density.
- Ultrasonic thickness gauge (0.01 mm resolution) with delay-line transducer and calibration block
- Non-contact IR thermometer for surface temperature verification
- Calibrated feeler gauge set or laser micrometer for gap measurement
- PU foam applicator gun with static mixer nozzle (e.g., Graco Reactor or equivalent)
- Approved solvent wiping kit (isopropyl alcohol 99% + lint-free wipes)
- Release agent / flange protectant coating
- PPE: Viton/Nitrile gloves, full-face respirator, indirect-vent safety glasses
