Purpose

To ensure the structural integrity of the dust collector dropout box by systematically inspecting wear plates for erosion, corrosion, or mechanical damage, and replacing them when thresholds are exceeded. This prevents leakage, maintains material conveyance efficiency, and reduces the risk of fugitive dust emissions.

Scope

This procedure applies to all dust collector dropout boxes in the facility, including those handling abrasive particulate such as wood dust, metal shavings, and sanding fines. It covers both internal and external inspections. Frequency: quarterly, or per manufacturer recommendation — whichever is shorter. Personnel performing this task must be trained in lockout/tagout and ultrasonic thickness measurement.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the entire dust collector system — fan motor, rotary airlock valve, and any material handling conveyors. Verify zero energy state with a live-dead-live test.
  • PPEWear safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1), nitrile gloves, hard hat, and steel‑toed boots. Use hearing protection if the system is still running during pre‑lockout assessment.
  • CONFIf entry into the dropout box is required (e.g., for large repairs), follow the facility’s confined space entry procedure — atmospheric monitoring, attendant, retrieval equipment.
  • WELDIf any welding or grinding is needed to remove/replace wear plates, obtain a hot work permit and assign a fire watch with an extinguisher.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Pre-shutdown exterior inspection. Walk around the dropout box. Look for visible leaks, rust stains, bulging, or any wear plate edges protruding through the shell.
2 System lockout/tagout. Isolate power to the dust collector fan, rotary airlock, and any upstream conveyors. Apply personal LOTO devices and verify zero energy.
3 Access dropout box interior. Open the access door or remove the inspection panel. If the opening is too small, consider confined space entry — otherwise use a combination of flashlight and inspection mirror.
4 Clean wear plate surfaces. Use a wire brush and scraper to remove thick dust, debris, or corrosion from the wear plates. Ensure the metal surface is exposed for accurate ultrasonic coupling.
5 Ultrasonic thickness measurement. Calibrate the gauge to the known material velocity. Take a minimum of 5 readings per wear plate: one centre and four corners. Record all values in the CMMS log.
6 Visual inspection for cracks and damage. Examine each plate for hairline cracks, warping, pitting, or missing sections. Use the inspection mirror to check behind flanges and hard‑to‑see areas.
7 Evaluate replacement criteria. Replace any plate with a thickness below 50% of the manufacturer’s original dimension, OR one with any visible crack or deformation. If in doubt, consult engineering.
8 Remove and replace worn plates. Loosen fasteners (note torque angle), remove old plate, clean mounting surface thoroughly. Apply a thin bead of gasket sealant, position new plate, insert new fasteners, and torque to manufacturer specification.
9 Post-replacement seal check. Close the access door and hand‑tighten. Power on the system briefly (with LOTO removed) and listen for air leaks or rattling. Re‑tighten if necessary.
10 Document and close out. Log all inspection readings, replacement actions, and any anomalies in your CMMS (ServiceGrid or equivalent). Update the PM schedule with the next due date.
