Purpose

The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure is to define the precise mechanical and electrical steps required to safely and effectively replace the main electrospindle on SCM Morbidelli CNC machining centers (Author 600/800/1000 series). Adherence to this procedure ensures that spindle runout remains within OEM tolerances of ≤ 0.005 mm TIR, prevents premature bearing wear, and eliminates the risk of catastrophic spindle failure during high-speed machining operations.

Scope

This SOP applies exclusively to SCM Morbidelli Author 600, 800, and 1000 series CNC machining centers equipped with HSK-F63 or HSK-A63 tooling interfaces. It is intended for use by certified Level 3 maintenance technicians with documented experience in electrospindle replacement, electrical safe work practices, and precision mechanical alignment. Any deviations from this procedure require written authorization from the maintenance supervisor and OEM technical support.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout (LOTO) must be performed on the main electrical disconnect and air supply. Verify zero energy state with a qualified electrician. Wait 5 minutes for spindle drive capacitor bank discharge before accessing any electrical components.
  • SPINDLEEngage the mechanical spindle lock before loosening or tightening the spindle retention nut. Attempting to remove the nut without the lock engaged can cause severe rotor damage and personal injury.
  • PPEANSI/CSA Z94.1 approved hard hat, Z87.1 safety glasses, and cut-resistant Level 5 gloves are mandatory. Use hearing protection if operating nearby machinery during testing.
  • LIFTThe spindle assembly weighs approximately 85 kg (187 lbs). Use an approved engine hoist or gantry crane rated for a minimum of 500 lbs. Ensure lifting straps are rated and free of wear or damage.
  • ESDWear ESD-safe grounding straps when handling the spindle connector to prevent damage to sensitive encoder and temperature sensor electronics inside the spindle housing.

  • Torque Wrench, calibrated, range 1–400 N.m
  • Dial Indicator with Magnetic Base, resolution 0.001 mm
  • Hydraulic Puller Set, 2-jaw, minimum 6-inch reach
  • Hoist / Gantry Crane, minimum 500 lb rated capacity
  • SAE & Metric Hex Bit and Socket Set, deep impact grade
  • High-Temperature Bearing Grease (SKF LGHP 2/2 or OEM equivalent)
  • Threadlocker (Loctite 243 – blue, or 271 – red per OEM torque spec)
  • Non-Contact Voltage Tester, CAT III rated
  • Lint-Free Cleaning Cloths & Spindle Bore Cleaner

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Preparation & Isolation: Perform LOTO on the main electrical disconnect and incoming air supply. Wait 5 minutes for spindle drive capacitor bank discharge. Verify zero energy state using a CAT III rated non-contact voltage tester on the spindle drive input and DC bus.
2 Access & Removal of Obstructions: Remove the protective spindle cover, tooling magazine carousel (if it impedes access), and coolant flood nozzles. Take reference photographs of all connectors and cable routing. Disconnect and cap power, coolant, and air lines to the spindle.
3 Spindle Tension Release: Using the OEM drawbar release tool, safely release the drawbar spring tension. Remove any tooling present in the spindle taper. This step prevents tool ejection hazards during disassembly.
4 Spindle Retention Disassembly: Engage the mechanical spindle lock tool to prevent rotor rotation. Remove the spindle retention nut (caution: left-hand thread on most Morbidelli models—verify OEM diagram.). Attach the hydraulic puller to the spindle body. Apply even hydraulic pressure to separate the spindle taper from the headstock housing. Do NOT use impact hammers.
5 Removal & Transfer: Attach lifting straps to the designated lifting eyelets on the spindle body. Lift the assembly (approx. 85 kg) carefully, clearing the headstock opening. Transfer the spindle to a clean, designated holding fixture. Inspect the headstock bore for burrs, scoring, or ovality.
6 Pre-installation Preparation: Clean the headstock bore taper with a lint-free cloth and spindle bore cleaner. Inspect the new spindle taper and apply a light film of clean lubricant. Install all new O-rings on the spindle body. Verify the new spindle P/N against the work order.
7 New Spindle Installation: Using lifting straps, carefully guide the new spindle into the headstock bore. Rotate the spindle slightly to align the anti-rotation keyway. Seat the taper completely. Apply Loctite 243 to the retention nut threads and torque to OEM specification (typically 280 N.m ± 10%).
8 Runout & Axis Alignment: Mount a dial indicator on the spindle housing with the tip touching the spindle test bar. Rotate the spindle slowly by hand. Record total indicated runout (TIR). Adjust by loosening and re-torquing the retention nut if necessary. Target TIR: ≤ 0.005 mm at the gage line, ≤ 0.010 mm at 100 mm.
9 Reconnection & Testing: Reconnect all service lines (power, coolant, air). Verify correct phase rotation on the spindle drive motor using a phase rotation meter. Remove LOTO tags. Perform a dry cycle at 500 RPM for 5 minutes, monitoring vibration and temperature rise. Gradually ramp to max operating speed, checking for abnormal noise or heat.
10 Finalization & Documentation: Reinstall all protective covers and coolant nozzles. Return the tooling magazine to its original position. Run a full automatic tool change cycle. Machine a test workpiece and verify final tolerances. Document all torque values, runout readings, and test results in the PM log (digitize in ServiceGrid).
