Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to establish a standardized method for the application of medium-strength (blue) and high-strength (red) threadlocker adhesives. Correct application ensures uniform torque retention, prevents galling, protects threads from corrosion, and allows for controlled disassembly based on the selected compound strength.

Scope

This procedure applies to all mechanical fasteners (bolts, studs, screws, and nuts) on rotating equipment, structural supports, and fluid-handling systems where vibration resistance is required. Blue medium-strength is specified for fasteners < M20 or where disassembly with standard hand tools is anticipated. Red high-strength is specified for fasteners > M20 or permanent assemblies where disassembly requires localized heating (250°C to 300°C). This procedure does not cover pre-applied dry patch materials or anaerobic sealants for flanges.

Safety Precautions
  • EYEWear ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses. Threadlockers can cause eye irritation. Emergency wash stations must be accessible. Irrigate immediately if contact occurs.
  • SKINWear nitrile gloves. Red high-strength threadlocker bonds skin instantly and can cause chemical burns. Remove contaminated clothing immediately. Do not use solvents to remove cured adhesive from skin.
  • VENTEnsure adequate ventilation in the work area. Methacrylate ester vapors are heavier than air and accumulate in low areas. Use explosion-proof ventilation if dispensing large quantities.
  • HEAT(Red removal protocol) Controlled heating required (250°C–300°C) for disassembly. Do not exceed 300°C to avoid damaging fastener metallurgy. Keep heat source away from hydraulic lines, fuel systems, and electrical conduits.

  • Threadlocker, Medium Strength (Blue) – e.g., Loctite 242
  • Threadlocker, High Strength (Red) – e.g., Loctite 271
  • Clean, lint-free wipes
  • Degreaser / Contact cleaner (e.g., Loctite SF 7060 or isopropyl alcohol 99%)
  • Nitrile gloves (chemical resistant)
  • Torque wrench (calibrated, applicable range)
  • Heat gun or induction heater (for red removal, if applicable)
  • Marker or tagging system for identifying treated fasteners

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Surface Preparation – Degrease & Dry — Thoroughly clean internal and external threads using a fast-evaporating degreaser or contact cleaner. Wipe dry with a lint-free cloth. Threads must be free of oil, grease, rust, and cutting fluids to ensure proper anaerobic curing.
2 Select the Correct Strength — Verify the required threadlocker strength from the equipment manual or torque specification sheet. Use Blue (medium) for adjustments and disassembly with hand tools. Use Red (high) for permanent, high-vibration assemblies requiring heat for disassembly.
3 Activate the Threadlocker — Shake the bottle vigorously for 30 seconds. Hold the nozzle close to the threads. Apply a continuous bead of threadlocker to the leading third of the male fastener threads. Do not over-apply; the anaerobic sealant requires confined metal surfaces to cure.
4 Assemble and Torque — Assemble the fastener into the female threaded hole immediately after application. Torque to the specified value using a calibrated torque wrench within the open time of the adhesive (Blue: 15–20 min, Red: 10–15 min).
5 Cure & Verification — Allow the joint to cure undisturbed for the specified fixture time (Blue: 20–30 min, Red: 30–60 min). Full mechanical cure is achieved in 24 hours. Mark the fastener head with a dot of corresponding color (blue or red) using a paint marker for future inspection.
6 Red Removal Protocol (if applicable) — To disassemble a red-threadlocked joint, apply localized heat (250°C to 300°C) to the nut or bolt head using a heat gun or induction heater until the adhesive releases. Remove the fastener immediately while hot. Clean residue from threads before reassembly.
