Purpose

To verify that every perimeter alarm zone, camera station, and recording system is functioning at its designed performance level. This audit identifies wiring degradation, tamper bypasses, battery backup failures, camera focus drift, IR illuminator degradation, and recording retention gaps — before a security incident occurs. The goal is 100% zone coverage, ≤ 3‑second alarm transmission to the monitoring station, and a minimum 30‑day retention of continuous high‑resolution footage.

Scope

This procedure applies to all exterior perimeter alarm sensors (magnetic contacts, motion detectors, glass‑break sensors, vibration sensors) and all exterior surveillance cameras (fixed, PTZ, thermal, IR) for a single warehouse facility. It covers the alarm panel, backup battery, all junction boxes and conduit, NVR/DVR, camera mounts, cable terminations, and the remote monitoring link. Yearly certification audits are outside scope; this is a quarterly operational check.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout any AC‑powered camera heads or alarm panel power supplies before opening enclosures. Verify zero voltage with a non‑contact tester.
  • ARCWear arc‑rated gloves and face shield when working near exposed battery terminals on 80+ Ah backup batteries. Use insulated tools.
  • FALLUse a 10‑ft ladder with a spotter when inspecting overhead camera mounts. Do not overreach — reposition the ladder for each mount. Wear a hard hat.
  • IRDo not stare directly into IR LED arrays. Prolonged exposure can cause retinal damage. Use the IR test card to verify illumination coverage.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Secure alarm panel access and recall zone map. Obtain the alarm system master code and zone wiring diagram from the facility security manager. Verify the floor plan matches the current zone layout. Log into the panel and print a zone list report.
2 Perform a full system test (walk test) on each zone. Place the alarm panel into walk test mode. Physically trigger each perimeter contact, motion detector, glass‑break sensor, and vibration sensor. Confirm the panel registers the correct zone ID and transmits a signal to the monitoring station (if applicable). Document any false alarms or missed activations.
3 Inspect all alarm contact wiring and tamper mechanisms. Open each sensor housing and visually inspect wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, or rodent damage. Use the multimeter to check continuity across the alarm loop. Test the tamper switch by removing the cover — verify the panel triggers a tamper alarm within 5 seconds.
4 Verify battery backup voltage and charge capacity. Measure the standby battery voltage at the alarm panel terminals. Replace any battery reading below 12.4 VDC (for 12 V systems). Perform a load test using the multimeter in series mode — the battery must sustain the panel in alarm condition for at least 4 hours. Record voltage and date on the battery label.
5 Audit camera coverage and alignment (exterior perimeter). Walk the entire perimeter with a live view on a test monitor. Check that each camera field‑of‑view covers the designated zone without obstruction. Adjust pan/tilt/zoom as needed. Verify that all junction boxes are sealed with silicone and that conduit entries are protected against moisture ingress.
6 Check camera image quality, focus, and night vision. For each camera, capture a still frame during daylight hours — confirm it meets the required resolution (minimum 2 MP for detection, 5 MP for identification). At night (or by blocking ambient light), verify the IR LEDs illuminate the full scene. Use the test card to confirm IR coverage reaches the recommended distance per manufacturer spec.
7 Validate recording retention and NVR/DVR health. Log into the NVR/DVR and check the recording schedule for each channel. Confirm that motion‑based recording is enabled with a 30‑day retention policy. Review the system log for hard drive errors, and run the built‑in storage health check (SMART status). Clean the NVR fans with compressed air if dust buildup is present.
8 Test remote access and alert delivery (push / email / SMS). Trigger an alarm event (e.g., open a perimeter door) and verify that the alarm panel sends the alert to the monitoring station and/or designated security team within 30 seconds. Check that the NVR push notification reaches the mobile app. Document any latency or failures.
9 Inspect physical security of camera mounts and cabling. Climb to each camera mount point. Tighten all fasteners (use locking washers if missing). Verify that coaxial/network cable connections are tightened with weatherproof caps. Check that the mount is not showing signs of rust or fatigue. Use a torque wrench if specified by the manufacturer.

Include pre‑audit readings, post‑audit readings, any repairs or adjustments performed, and photos of anomalies.
