Drawer Slide Extension Under Load
Standardized procedure for installing and validating full-extension drawer slides under maximum rated load to ensure smooth operation, alignment, and long-term durability in industrial storage applications.
To establish a repeatable method for installing drawer slides and verifying their performance under load. This SOP reduces callbacks due to binding, sagging, or premature wear by enforcing alignment tolerances, load testing at 150% of rated capacity, and correct torque specifications. Standardization improves throughput and ensures consistent operator experience across shifts.
This procedure applies to all drawer slide installations on assembly workbenches, tool cabinets, and mobile storage units in the Assembly Department, Finishing Department, and Maintenance Shop. It covers slides rated for loads between 50–500 lb (23–227 kg) with full-extension capability. Not applicable to undermount or single-extension slides — consult separate SOP for those variants.
- Lockout/tagout any power tools (drills, impact drivers) before changing bits or clearing jams. Remove all energy sources.
- Wear cut-resistant gloves when handling slides (sharp edges) and safety glasses when drilling or driving screws. Steel-toed boots required when moving loaded drawer test fixtures.
- Use mechanical lift assistance for drawers heavier than 50 lb. Never attempt to lift or move a loaded drawer without a second person or hoist.
- Keep fingers clear of slide travel paths during extension and retraction. Use push sticks or spacing blocks during alignment.
- Full-extension drawer slides (pair, rated per load spec – verify label)
- Mounting screws: M4 x 10 mm pan head (supplied with slides or equivalent)
- Power screwdriver/drill with adjustable torque clutch (2.5–3.0 N·m)
- Precision level (0.5 mm/m accuracy) and steel measuring tape
- Slide positioning template or paper jig (custom-printed for slide model)
- Test weight set: sandbags or steel plates to achieve 150% of rated load
- Torque wrench with bit socket (for final torque verification)
- Shim washers (0.5 mm and 1.0 mm) for fine height adjustment
