Purpose

To establish a repeatable method for installing drawer slides and verifying their performance under load. This SOP reduces callbacks due to binding, sagging, or premature wear by enforcing alignment tolerances, load testing at 150% of rated capacity, and correct torque specifications. Standardization improves throughput and ensures consistent operator experience across shifts.

Scope

This procedure applies to all drawer slide installations on assembly workbenches, tool cabinets, and mobile storage units in the Assembly Department, Finishing Department, and Maintenance Shop. It covers slides rated for loads between 50–500 lb (23–227 kg) with full-extension capability. Not applicable to undermount or single-extension slides — consult separate SOP for those variants.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout any power tools (drills, impact drivers) before changing bits or clearing jams. Remove all energy sources.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves when handling slides (sharp edges) and safety glasses when drilling or driving screws. Steel-toed boots required when moving loaded drawer test fixtures.
  • MANUALUse mechanical lift assistance for drawers heavier than 50 lb. Never attempt to lift or move a loaded drawer without a second person or hoist.
  • PINCHKeep fingers clear of slide travel paths during extension and retraction. Use push sticks or spacing blocks during alignment.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Full-extension drawer slides (pair, rated per load spec – verify label)
  • Mounting screws: M4 x 10 mm pan head (supplied with slides or equivalent)
  • Power screwdriver/drill with adjustable torque clutch (2.5–3.0 N·m)
  • Precision level (0.5 mm/m accuracy) and steel measuring tape
  • Slide positioning template or paper jig (custom-printed for slide model)
  • Test weight set: sandbags or steel plates to achieve 150% of rated load
  • Torque wrench with bit socket (for final torque verification)
  • Shim washers (0.5 mm and 1.0 mm) for fine height adjustment
  • Compliance tag and permanent marker

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Verify Slide Rating: Confirm that the slide label indicates a dynamic load capacity equal to or greater than the intended drawer payload. Record the rated load on the compliance tag. If undersized, stop and request replacement slide pair.
2 Mark Mounting Holes: Place the slide template or paper jig flush against the drawer side and the cabinet opening. Use a pencil to mark all screw hole centres. Confirm horizontal spacing matches slide pre-drilled holes.
3 Install Male Member on Drawer: Align the male (inner) slide section with the marks on the drawer side. Start all screws by hand, then tighten progressively with a drill at low torque (2.0 N·m). Ensure screws are seated flush but not stripped.
4 Install Female Member on Cabinet: Position the female (outer) section against the cabinet frame. Use the level to verify horizontal alignment — maximum 1 mm deviation over the length of the slide. Loosely start screws, then tighten sequentially.
5 Check Clearance and Freemovement: Insert the drawer and slide it to full extension and back. If binding occurs at any point, loosen the cabinet-side screws, adjust with shims, and retighten. Perform three full cycles. If binding persists, inspect for frame twist or debris.
6 Apply Test Load: Distribute test weights evenly across the drawer bottom to achieve 150% of the rated slide capacity. For example, for a 100 lb rated slide, use 150 lb of weights. Ensure weights cannot shift during extension.
7 Load Extension Test: Fully extend the loaded drawer and observe for side-to-side wobble, front sag (more than 3 mm drop), or sticking. Retract fully and repeat two more times. No abnormal noise or sudden changes in friction allowed.
8 Re-torque Fasteners: With load still applied, use a torque wrench set to 2.8 N·m (±0.3) to confirm each screw is at specification. Mark each screw head with a torque seal mark.
9 Remove Test Weights & Final Check: Remove all test weights. Run one additional unloaded cycle to ensure slide returns to neutral without drift. Measure and record the drawer front gap (should be ≤ 2 mm uniform).
10 Document & Sign Off: Complete the compliance tag with slide model, rated load, installation date, and inspector initials. Attach tag to the rear of the drawer or inside the cabinet frame per local QMS procedure.
