Purpose

To define a standardized test method for verifying that toe kick board clips meet the minimum pull-out strength specification. This procedure ensures consistent clip performance, prevents kick board detachment during service life, and eliminates variability in installation quality across different crews.

Scope

Applies to all toe kick board clip installations on cabinet toe kicks in residential and commercial millwork. Covers both screw‑type and adhesive‑type clip systems. Does not cover clip layout or spacing, which is defined in the installation standard. This procedure is intended for use by quality control inspectors, millwork assemblers, and installation teams.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLock out all electrical power to any equipment in the test area. Ensure no energized tools or cords are within the work zone during setup and testing.
  • PPEWear impact‑rated safety glasses and cut‑resistant gloves (ANSI A4 or higher). The test applies tension; clips may snap or release suddenly, creating projectile or pinch hazards.
  • ERGMaintain a stable stance and keep all body parts clear of the direct line of pull. Do not wrap the pull gauge cable around hands or fingers.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Digital pull force gauge, range 0–100 lbf, resolution 0.1 lbf
  • Toe kick board clip samples (minimum 3 per batch)
  • Test fixture or rigid clamp to secure clip to a bench
  • Manufacturer’s specification sheet with target pull‑out force
  • Data recording sheet (paper or digital)
  • Calibration certificate for pull gauge (valid within 12 months)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Secure the toe kick board clip in the test fixture so that it is rigidly held and oriented exactly as it would be during installation. The engagement tab must be exposed and aligned perpendicular to the fixture.
2 Attach the pull force gauge hook or adapter to the clip’s engagement tab. Verify the pulling axis is straight, perpendicular to the clip base, and free of any side loads.
3 Apply tensile force at a steady rate of approximately 10 lbf per second. Observe the gauge reading continuously. Record the maximum force (peak hold) at the moment the clip releases or permanently deforms.
4 Compare the recorded value to the specification: screw‑type clips must exceed 35 lbf; adhesive‑type clips must exceed 25 lbf (or follow the manufacturer’s stated value). If the force reading is below the threshold, flag the clip as non‑conforming.
5 Repeat steps 1–4 for a minimum of three clips from each production batch. If any sample fails, investigate root cause (material, installation method, clip type) and retest a sample of five clips from the same batch. If more than one out of five fails, reject the entire batch.
6 Document all results on the data recording sheet, including batch ID, clip type, measured forces, and pass/fail status. Submit the completed sheet to quality control for batch release or further action.
