Wall Oven Cabinet Heat Shield Installation

This procedure covers the measurement, fabrication, fastening, and final inspection of a metallic heat shield installed in the cavity behind a built-in wall oven. The shield protects surrounding cabinetry from radiant heat, ensures code compliance (CSA C22.2 No. 61 / UL 858), and maintains the manufacturer's required clearances to combustibles. Purpose

To establish a repeatable, code-compliant procedure for fitting a metal heat shield behind a wall oven. A properly installed shield reduces the radiant surface temperature on the rear cabinet panel to within the 50 °C rise limit prescribed by appliance manufacturers and local building codes. This SOP eliminates guesswork, prevents callbacks due to overheating damage, and standardizes the work across all installers — whether in custom residential builds or production multi-unit framing.

Scope

This procedure applies to any wall oven installation — single or double cavity, standard depth (610–685 mm) — where the rear cabinet panel is constructed of plywood, OSB, or MDF and the oven manufacturer specifies a metallic radiant barrier or a minimum ⅛″ (3 mm) air gap to combustibles. Excluded: installations into metal stud walls, zero-clearance fire-rated assemblies, and ovens with integral rear heat shield panels. All work is performed with the oven unboxed and the cabinet rough opening prepared to the appliance's cut-sheet dimensions.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOVerify that the branch circuit supplying the wall oven is locked out and tagged at the breaker panel before any electrical connections or cavity work begins. Confirm zero voltage with a rated contact voltmeter.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4 minimum) when handling sheared sheet-metal edges. Use safety glasses with Z87+ rating during cutting, drilling, and deburring. Hearing protection required when operating circular saw on metal.
  • BURNAll metal edges must be deburred immediately after cutting. Even 24-ga steel will develop razor-sharp burrs that can cause deep lacerations. Do not carry or handle shield blanks without gloves.
  • FOULEnsure the cavity is free of combustible debris, loose insulation, and sawdust before installing the shield. Accumulated dust near the oven chassis presents a fire hazard during first use burn-off.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Measuring tape — 8 m / 25 ft minimum
  • Combination square
  • Circular saw with carbide-tipped blade or sheet-metal nibbler
  • Drill/driver with ⅛″ and ¼″ bits
  • Self-tapping #8 sheet-metal screws, ¾″ length (minimum 20)
  • HVAC foil tape, 2″ width, UL-181 rated
  • Flush-cut aviation snips (left and right)
  • Deburring tool or fine-cut file
  • Heat-resistant gloves (rated ≥ 200 °C / 400 °F)
  • 24-ga galvanized steel sheet or 0.6 mm 304 stainless steel, sized to cavity

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Verify cabinet opening dimensions against oven spec sheet. Confirm width, height, and depth. Mark the centreline on the rear cabinet wall with a pencil plumb line. Remove any existing insulation, cross-bracing, or debris from the cavity.
2 Measure the cavity width and height. Transfer these dimensions to 24-ga (0.61 mm) galvanized steel or 304 stainless steel sheet, adding 6 mm (¼″) wrap-around tabs on each side for edge stiffening. Cut blank with circular saw or nibbler; deburr all edges.
3 Place shield blank into cavity and trace around perimeter on the rear cabinet panel. Remove blank. Using a 2″ hole saw, drill a ventilated pass-through at the top centre and bottom centre of the traced area to allow convective airflow behind the shield.
4 Reinstall shield blank. Drill ⅛″ pilot holes through the blank into the cabinet rear panel at all four corners and every 150 mm along the perimeter. Use self-tapping #8 screws to fasten shield flush to the cabinet panel. Do not over-torque — strip risk on sheet metal.
5 Apply UL-181-rated foil tape over every screw head and along all four edges of the shield to create a continuous radiant barrier. Overlap tape seams a minimum of 25 mm (1″). Smooth all tape down with firm hand pressure to eliminate air pockets.
6 Inspect all four edges for sharp burrs, exposed fastener heads, or gaps larger than 3 mm. Confirm the shield is flush to the rear panel with no bowing. Use a heat-gun test at 200 °C for 30 seconds on a discrete corner — shield surface shall not exceed 50 °C rise. Document inspection on the sign-off sheet.
