Purpose

To ensure safe, reliable operation of trailer landing gear by performing systematic visual and structural inspections combined with gearbox lubrication. This procedure prevents catastrophic landing gear collapse during coupling or uncoupling, extends component life, and reduces unplanned repairs.

Scope

Applies to all tandem-axle semi-trailers in the fleet equipped with manual crank or powered landing gear systems. Covers both the mechanical legs (inner/outer tubes, cross‑shaft) and the gearbox assembly. Excludes hydraulic landing gear systems and dollies used in intermodal operations.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout landing gear system before any inspection or maintenance. If equipped with an electric motor, disconnect and tag the power source.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, and steel‑toe boots. Use a class III vest when working near active yard traffic.
  • FALLUse a sturdy step ladder or platform when inspecting upper gearbox components. Never stand on the fifth wheel or trailer frame.

  • Grease gun with NLGI #2 lithium complex grease (or as specified by manufacturer)
  • Clean rag and wire brush
  • High‑intensity flashlight
  • Landing gear crank handle (if manual system)
  • Torque wrench (for mounting bolts per manufacturer spec)
  • Inspection checklist / maintenance log sheet

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Park the trailer on a level, hard surface. Chock rear wheels and set the tractor parking brakes. Ensure the fifth wheel is not under load (trailer uncoupled).
2 Visually inspect both landing gear legs (outer and inner tubes) for cracks, bends, weld defects, corrosion, or misalignment. Note any damage beyond surface rust.
3 Check the gearbox housing for oil leakage, cracks, or evidence of impact. Verify that the gearbox vent (if present) is clear and not plugged.
4 Lubricate the gearbox via the grease fitting(s) using the grease gun. Pump until fresh grease is purged from low‑point seals or overflow ports. Wipe away excess.
5 Operate the landing gear through a full cycle – raise fully, then lower fully – ensuring smooth, even movement with no binding or grinding noise.
6 Inspect the crank assembly, handle, and all mounting bolts. Torque bolts to manufacturer specifications (if given). Check that the cross‑shaft and universal joints are tight and not worn.
7 Record inspection findings, lubrication date, and any corrective actions taken (e.g., replaced fitting, tightened bolts) in the maintenance log. Flag trailers requiring follow‑up repair.
