Trailer Towing Safety Check: Lights, Hitch, and Tires
Standardized pre-tow inspection protocol covering trailer lighting systems, hitch coupling integrity, tire condition, and final safety checkout for logistics and field installation fleets.
To establish a standardized, repeatable safety inspection protocol for trailers exceeding 1,500 kg GVWR prior to towing. This procedure mitigates the risk of trailer detachment, lighting system failures, and tire-related incidents that lead to road accidents, equipment downtime, and regulatory non-compliance under provincial transport laws (e.g., CVSE, MTO, WorkSafeBC).
This procedure applies to all utility, equipment, and enclosed cargo trailers operated by logistics and field installation crews. It covers mechanical hitch inspection, electrical lighting verification, tire and wheel assembly checks, and final coupling validation. All drivers and installers must complete this checklist before every tow, regardless of distance, and report any deficiency immediately to fleet dispatch.
- Chock trailer wheels and engage truck parking brake before performing any under-trailer or wheel-torque checks. Ensure trailer is resting securely on its landing gear before coupling.
- Wear high-visibility Class 2 vest, steel-toed CSA-approved boots, and ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses during all exterior inspections.
- Never position yourself between the truck and trailer during hitch coupling or uncoupling. Use a designated spotter and maintain clear hand signals.
- Inspect 7-pin or 5-pin wiring harness for exposed wires, corrosion, or bent pins before connecting. Do not probe energized connectors with bare tools.
- Torque wrench (calibrated, 1/2" drive) rated for wheel lug nut range (typically 90–120 ft-lb).
- Digital tire pressure gauge (0–150 PSI range with chuck and bleed valve).
- Electrical circuit tester or multi-meter for trailer lighting (tail, brake, turn signals).
- Heavy-duty jack and four wheel chocks rated for loaded trailer weight.
- Dielectric grease for weatherproofing electrical connections and spray lubricant for hitch ball and coupler latch.
