Implement a standardized batching and route-optimized picking process to eliminate ad-hoc wander time, reduce pick errors caused by context switching, and maximize lines picked per man-hour. This procedure enforces a strict, system-generated pick path and batch wave logic within the WMS.
Applies to all outbound order pickers operating in the main pick module (including dry, cold storage, and bulk zones) utilizing the WMS picking platform. Covers single-order picking and multi-order batch picking with a physical pick cart or pallet jack. Excludes pallet-level bulk picks (SOP #W-108) and automated goods-to-person systems.
- Lockout/Tagout powered mobile equipment (pallet jacks, conveyors) before performing any maintenance. Verify zero energy state. Never reach over moving conveyor lines.
- Mandatory: CSA Z94.3 compliant safety glasses, Z195 steel-toed boots, cut-resistant gloves, and ANSI 107 high-visibility vest inside the pick module.
- Lift with the load close to the body. Use a vacuum lifter for cases > 15 kg. Rotate tasks every 2 hours to prevent repetitive strain. Bend at the knees, not the waist.
- Keep all aisles clear of empty pallets, stretch wrap, and debris. Report any spillages immediately to the shift lead. Do not block fire extinguishers or emergency exits.
- WMS terminal or voice-picking headset with integrated barcode scanner
- Battery-powered pallet jack or multi-tote batch picking cart
- Thermal label printer (Zebra ZT410 or equivalent) with 4" x 6" labels
- Standard shipping boxes / tote bins (colour-coded by destination zone)
- Personal Protective Equipment: CSA safety shoes, cut-resistant gloves, high-vis vest
