Purpose

Implement a standardized batching and route-optimized picking process to eliminate ad-hoc wander time, reduce pick errors caused by context switching, and maximize lines picked per man-hour. This procedure enforces a strict, system-generated pick path and batch wave logic within the WMS.

Scope

Applies to all outbound order pickers operating in the main pick module (including dry, cold storage, and bulk zones) utilizing the WMS picking platform. Covers single-order picking and multi-order batch picking with a physical pick cart or pallet jack. Excludes pallet-level bulk picks (SOP #W-108) and automated goods-to-person systems.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout powered mobile equipment (pallet jacks, conveyors) before performing any maintenance. Verify zero energy state. Never reach over moving conveyor lines.
  • PPEMandatory: CSA Z94.3 compliant safety glasses, Z195 steel-toed boots, cut-resistant gloves, and ANSI 107 high-visibility vest inside the pick module.
  • ERGOLift with the load close to the body. Use a vacuum lifter for cases > 15 kg. Rotate tasks every 2 hours to prevent repetitive strain. Bend at the knees, not the waist.
  • HSEKeep all aisles clear of empty pallets, stretch wrap, and debris. Report any spillages immediately to the shift lead. Do not block fire extinguishers or emergency exits.
Required Tools & Materials
  • WMS terminal or voice-picking headset with integrated barcode scanner
  • Battery-powered pallet jack or multi-tote batch picking cart
  • Thermal label printer (Zebra ZT410 or equivalent) with 4" x 6" labels
  • Standard shipping boxes / tote bins (colour-coded by destination zone)
  • Personal Protective Equipment: CSA safety shoes, cut-resistant gloves, high-vis vest

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Log In & Launch Wave. Scan your operator badge on the WMS dashboard. Navigate to Outbound → Order Batching. The system auto-queues orders based on the configured cut-off time.
2 Route Calculation. The TSP engine calculates the optimal serpentine path. Review the estimated pick time and total distance. If distance exceeds 200 metres, split the batch.
3 Slot Locating. Proceed to the first pick slot listed (Aisle-Bay-Level, e.g., A-03-B-14). Scan the shelf barcode using the terminal or headset to confirm location identity.
4 Pick Execution. The screen displays SKU, GTIN, and Quantity. Scan the product GTIN. The system validates a Pick from match. Pick the exact quantity into the designated tote.
5 Short Pick Protocol. If inventory is insufficient, tap Short Pick. The system assigns a secondary location. Never manually override a quantity or substitute without supervisor approval.
6 Batch Close & Handoff. After scanning and picking the final item, tap Close Wave. The printer auto-generates a consolidation label. Attach it to the pallet and transfer to the Outbound Hold staging lane.
