Purpose

This SOP defines the standardized method for inspecting, selecting, routing, and maintaining power tool cords on active construction sites. Its primary objective is to eliminate ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) nuisance tripping, prevent electrical shock incidents, and ensure continuous compliance with provincial safety regulations. By following this procedure, crews reduce downtime caused by tripped GFCIs and protect both personnel and equipment from electrical damage.

Scope

This procedure applies to all portable power tools, extension cords, temporary power distribution equipment, and GFCI-protected receptacles used on sites under Ryxen operations. It covers cord lengths up to 100 ft, tools drawing up to 20 A, and standard 120 V single-phase circuits. It does not apply to permanent electrical installations, high-voltage equipment above 600 V, or explosion-proof environments requiring intrinsically safe circuits.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout any circuit before replacing receptacles or splicing cords. Verify zero energy with a non-contact voltage tester before handling conductors.
  • PPEWear insulated gloves (Class 00 minimum) and safety glasses when connecting or inspecting cords. Use rubber-soled boots on wet surfaces.
  • GFCITest every GFCI outlet before first use each day. Press TEST then RESET — if the indicator does not trip, tag out the outlet and report it immediately.
  • WATERKeep all cord connections and power tools at least 10 ft away from standing water, puddles, or wet concrete. Use GFCI-protected portable boxes rated for wet locations (NEMA 3R or better).
  • TRIPRoute cords away from walkways, stairs, and doorways wherever possible. Use rubber cord protectors or ramps where crossing paths is unavoidable. Mark with high-visibility tape.

  • GFCI outlet tester (e.g., Klein RT210 or equivalent)
  • Heavy-duty extension cords — 12 AWG minimum for distances up to 100 ft; 10 AWG for longer runs or 15+ A tools
  • Rubber cord protectors / ramps (rated for pedestrian and light vehicle traffic)
  • Cable ties or Velcro straps for bundling slack
  • Insulated gloves (Class 00, rated 500 V AC)
  • Non-contact voltage tester
  • Lockout/tagout kit with padlock, hasp, and tag
  • High-visibility tape (orange or yellow) for marking cord routes
  • Extra GFCI portable boxes (NEMA 3R) for wet location use

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Pre-inspect all cords and tools. Visually inspect each extension cord and power tool cord for cuts, abrasions, exposed conductors, or damaged plugs. Use a GFCI outlet tester to verify proper ground and polarity. Tag and remove any damaged equipment from service.
2 Select proper extension cord gauge. Use 12 AWG or heavier extension cords for tools drawing up to 15 A over distances up to 100 ft. For longer runs or higher amperage tools, upgrade to 10 AWG. Never use indoor-rated cords outdoors.
3 Route cords away from traffic and water. Lay cords along walls, overhead on cable hooks, or inside cord protectors across walkways. Keep cords at least 10 ft away from standing water or wet surfaces. Use elevated stands if necessary.
4 Connect to GFCI-protected outlets. Plug cords only into GFCI-protected receptacles. Test the GFCI before each use by pressing the 'Test' button. If the GFCI trips during operation, isolate the fault by unplugging tools one at a time.
5 Manage cord connections and daisy-chaining. Never connect multiple extension cords in series (daisy-chain). Use a single cord long enough for the job, or connect to a GFCI-protected power distribution box. Secure all connections with twist-lock or cord caps to prevent accidental disconnection.
6 Secure cords to prevent tripping and damage. Use cable ties or Velcro straps to bundle loose lengths. Lay cords flat and protect with rubber ramps at crossing points. Avoid sharp bends or pinching in doorways. Mark cord routes with high-visibility tape.
7 Final verification and daily re-inspection. After setup, walk the entire cord path confirming no exposed wires, firm connections, and clear routing. At the start of each shift, re-inspect high-traffic sections and retest GFCI functionality. Document inspections on the daily safety checklist.
