Purpose

To define the mandatory guarding configurations, safe operating procedures, and inspection protocols for radial arm saws to minimize the risk of kickback, lacerations, and airborne debris. This SOP ensures compliance with CSA Z432 and WorkSafeBC regulations.

Scope

This procedure applies to all radial arm saws (both manual and automatic return) used in the facility. It covers setup, saw guard adjustment, cutting operations (crosscutting, ripping), and post-operation cleaning. Not applicable to compound miter saws or table saws.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTODe-energize and lock out the saw before adjusting or changing blades. Verify zero energy state using a recognized lockout/tagout procedure.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, hearing protection, and a dust mask. Avoid loose clothing, gloves, and jewelry that could become caught in the blade.
  • GUARDThe upper blade guard, lower anti-kickback pawls, and spreader must be in place and functioning before any cut. Do not operate with guards removed or disabled.
  • KICKEnsure the saw blade is sharp and the fence is properly aligned. Use a push stick for narrow pieces. Never stand directly in line with the blade.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Radial arm saw with operational guards (upper guard, lower guard, spreader, anti-kickback pawls)
  • Approved push stick or push block
  • Properly rated saw blade for material (e.g., carbide-tipped for wood)
  • Measuring tape and square
  • Dust collection system or vacuum
  • Personal protective equipment (safety glasses, hearing protection, dust mask)
  • Operator manual for specific saw model

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Pre-Operation Inspection: Check that blade guard, anti-kickback pawls, and spreader are installed, clean, and move freely. Verify blade is sharp and properly mounted.
2 Guard Adjustment: Adjust upper guard to cover the blade above the material. Ensure lower guard retracts smoothly during cut. Set spreader to align with blade kerf.
3 Material Setup: Place material flat against the fence. Mark cut line. For ripping, set fence parallel to blade; for crosscutting, use miter gauge or crosscut fence.
4 Cutting Operation: Stand to the side of the blade path. Start saw and allow to reach full speed. Feed material slowly with push stick (if needed) – do not force. Maintain control until blade stops if saw is manual return.
5 Cut Completion: Release trigger and wait for blade to stop completely before removing cut pieces. Do not reach around blade.
6 Post-Operation: Lockout saw, clean debris, inspect guards for damage. Report any issues to supervisor.
