Purpose

To ensure the pneumatic valve bank on the CNC router is free of leaks that could cause loss of pressure, erratic tool changes, or unsafe operation. This procedure verifies system integrity after maintenance or at scheduled intervals, reducing downtime and extending component life.

Scope

This SOP applies to all CNC routers equipped with a pneumatic valve bank (e.g., SMC, Festo, or Norgren) used for tool clamping, spindle orientation, and dust control. It covers both manual and automated leak testing methods. Operators and maintenance personnel must follow these steps at every required PM interval or after any pneumatic component replacement.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLock out/tag out the pneumatic supply at the source. Depressurize the entire system and verify zero pressure with a gauge before opening any fitting or valve.
  • PPEWear ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses, hearing protection (if nearby machines running), and cut-resistant gloves when handling fittings or using hand tools.
  • VENTEnsure the area is well-ventilated when using aerosol bubble leak detectors. Keep away from sparks, open flames, or hot surfaces.
  • PRESSNever exceed the rated pressure of the valve bank (typically 150 psi). Use only regulated shop air with a functional filter/regulator.

  • Digital pressure gauge (0-150 psi, ±0.5% accuracy)
  • Ultrasonic leak detector or bubble leak detection spray (e.g., Snoop)
  • Adjustable wrench / combination wrench set (metric & imperial)
  • Thread seal tape (PTFE) — ensure compatible with pneumatic fittings
  • Manufacturer’s pneumatic schematic and service manual
  • Lockout/tagout kit (padlock, hasp, tag)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lock out/tag out the pneumatic supply to the CNC router. Depressurize the system by opening a drain valve or engaging the purge button. Wait for all air to exhaust.
2 Confirm zero pressure on the main pressure gauge before proceeding. If a secondary gauge is present on the valve bank, verify it also reads zero.
3 Visually inspect all tubing, fittings, and valve connections for signs of damage, wear, or loose fittings. Pay attention to push-to-connect fittings and threaded ports.
4 Connect a digital pressure gauge to a test port or the main supply line after the filter/regulator. Use a T-fitting if necessary.
5 Slowly pressurize the system to the recommended operating pressure (typically 80–90 psi) using the manual override on the main shutdown valve. Monitor the gauge to avoid over-pressurization.
6 Isolate the valve bank by closing the shutoff valve downstream (if present). Observe the pressure gauge for a drop of more than 2 psi over 2 minutes. Record the start and end pressures.
7 If a drop is detected, use an ultrasonic leak detector or bubble spray (e.g., Snoop) to identify the leaking component. Common leak points: tube fittings, solenoid valve exhaust ports, cylinder seals, and regulator relief vents.
8 Rectify leaks by tightening fittings, replacing O-rings/seals, or replacing faulty valve modules. Reapply thread seal tape to any pipe thread connections that were disturbed. Ensure tape does not obstruct the bore.
9 After repairs, repeat the pressure hold test (steps 5–6). If pressure holds steady within 2 psi for 2 minutes, gradually restore full pressure and test valve bank functionality by actuating each valve via the control panel.
10 Record test results, date, technician, and any repairs made in the maintenance log. Remove lockout/tagout and return the machine to service. File a copy of the completed checklist per your facility’s PM protocol.
