Edgebander Buffing Unit Pad Replacement and Speed Settings
Standardized, safe, and efficient procedure for replacing worn buffing unit pads on a CNC edgebander (SCM, Homag, or equivalent) and configuring spindle speed parameters based on material type and glue resin formulation.
The purpose of this SOP is to establish a standardized, safe, and efficient procedure for replacing worn buffing unit pads on a CNC edgebander and to define the correct rotational speed parameters for the buffing motor based on material type and glue resin formulation. Improper pad condition or spindle speed leads to surface defects (scorch marks, incomplete polishing) and reduces pad service life.
Applies to all CNC edgebanders with an automated buffing unit (single or twin-motor configuration) within the production facility. This procedure covers pad change-outs scheduled by PM work orders or triggered by quality inspection failures.
- Lockout/Tagout the main electrical disconnect for the edgebander. Verify zero energy state on the buffing motor spindle using a qualified electrician's meter. Wait 60 seconds for spindle capacitor discharge.
- ANSI Z87.1 rated safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A5 level), and hearing protection (NRR 29 dB) are mandatory. Tyvek sleeves recommended to prevent glue resin contact with skin.
- The buffing unit housing and pad spindle can reach 60°C during continuous operation. Allow a 15-minute cool-down period before initiating physical contact. Verify temperature < 35°C with an infrared thermometer.
- Keep hands clear of the pneumatic pad tensioning cylinder during removal and installation. The cylinder can actuate unexpectedly if residual air pressure is present in the line.
- Replacement buffing pad assembly (OEM spec felt density: 0.35 g/cm³, thickness 20 mm)
- Hex key set (metric: 4mm, 5mm, 6mm)
- Torque wrench (3-15 Nm range)
- Dial indicator with magnetic base (for spindle runout check)
- Digital tachometer (non-contact, range 100-10,000 RPM)
- Isopropyl alcohol wipes (industrial grade, 99% concentration)
- Anti-seize compound (nickel-based, high-temp)
- Locktite 243 (medium-strength threadlocker)
