Purpose

The non-stick coating (PTFE/ceramic) on an edgebander glue pot is critical for preventing adhesive buildup and thermal degradation. Scope

This procedure applies to all operator-led and maintenance-led inspections of heated glue pots on single-sided and double-sided edgebanders equipped with granular or cartridge glue systems. It covers visual inspection criteria, cleaning methods compatible with non-stick surfaces, and decision thresholds for scheduling re-coating. This document does not cover full glue pot replacement or re-coating procedures, which require specialized technical skills and equipment.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout machine and allow glue pot to cool completely (< 50°C) before inspection to prevent burns and accidental activation.
  • PPEWear heat-resistant gloves and safety glasses during handling of heating elements and chemical cleaning agents.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout & Cool Down: Initiate LOTO procedure. Wait until glue pot temperature drops below 50°C to prevent burns and curing of adhesive onto tools.
2 Visual Coating Inspection: Under bright light, examine the entire glue pot surface. Check for peeling, pinholes, deep scratches, or discoloration. Mark compromised areas with a heat-resistant marker.
3 Dry Residue Removal: Using a wooden or PTFE scraper, gently lift off any dried or charred glue crusts. Do not use steel scrapers or abrasive pads as they will destroy the non-stick layer.
4 Chemical Cleaning: Apply an approved degreaser to a lint-free cloth and wipe the glue pot surface. Avoid pouring degreaser directly onto the pot to prevent pooling and chemical damage.
5 Coating Integrity Report: Measure the area of coating loss. If > 15% of the total surface is compromised, or if bare aluminum is exposed, flag the glue pot for re-coating or replacement.
6 Re-assembly & Functional Test: Reinstall glue pot components. Heat to operating temperature and run a test strip. Observe the glue curtain for uniform flow and absence of charred particles.
