Purpose

This procedure defines a standardized, repeatable method for replacing the glue pot shaft seal and scraper blade assembly on industrial edgebanders. Proper seal and scraper replacement eliminates adhesive leaks, prevents bearing contamination, and restores uniform glue application — directly reducing rejects and unplanned downtime.

Scope

Applies to all single-sided and double-sided edgebanders equipped with a heated glue pot assembly — specifically the seal housing and scraper blade components. Covers machines from Homag, SCM, Biesse, Brandt, and equivalent manufacturers. Technicians performing this procedure must be qualified in pneumatic system isolation and mechanical disassembly of adhesive application units.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout electrical and pneumatic supplies to the glue pot heating circuit and drive motor. Verify zero energy per CSA Z460.
  • HOTAllow glue pot to cool below 60°C before disassembly. Confirm temperature with a calibrated contact or IR thermometer. Residual adhesive can exceed 180°C.
  • PPEWear heat-resistant gloves (rated 200°C+), safety glasses, and apron. Use LEV or HEPA vacuum when cleaning cured adhesive with solvents.
  • CHEMReview SDS for all cleaning solvents and release agents. Use only approved industrial non-stick compounds near the glue pot.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Replacement seal kit (shaft seal, O-rings, scraper blade)
  • Torque wrench (5–25 N·m range)
  • Hex key set (metric, 3–10 mm)
  • Brass scraper / putty knife
  • Heat-resistant gloves (200°C+ rated)
  • Safety glasses & apron
  • Industrial non-stick release agent (silicone-based)
  • Shop rags / lint-free cloths
  • Vacuum with HEPA filter
  • Calibrated thermometer (IR or contact, 0–250°C)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout & Cool-Down — Perform lockout/tagout on electrical and pneumatic supplies to the glue pot heating circuit and drive motor. Verify zero energy. Allow glue pot to cool below 60°C using active cooling if necessary; confirm with calibrated thermometer.
2 Remove Glue Pot Access Cover — Remove the access cover and guard assembly from the glue pot housing. Retain all fasteners in a labeled container.
3 Disassemble Scraper Assembly — Loosen and remove the scraper blade retaining bolts. Slide the scraper blade and its carrier off the shaft. Mark orientation of shims if present.
4 Extract Shaft Seal Housing — Using a hex key, remove the seal housing retaining bolts. Gently pry the housing from the bore using a brass scraper; do not score the bore surface.
5 Clean Seal Bore and Shaft Surface — Clean the seal bore, shaft shoulder, and O-ring grooves with a lint-free cloth and approved solvent. Remove all cured adhesive residue. Vacuum debris.
6 Install New Shaft Seal and O-Rings — Apply a thin film of release agent to the new seal lip and O-rings. Press the seal squarely into the bore until seated. Install O-rings in their grooves without twisting.
7 Reassemble Scraper Blade and Adjust Gap — Slide the scraper carrier onto the shaft. Fit the new scraper blade and tighten retaining bolts to the torque specified in the manufacturer manual (typically 8–12 N·m). Verify blade parallel to the roller within 0.1 mm.
8 Pressure Test and Verify Seal Integrity — Reconnect pneumatic supply while keeping electrical LOTO active. Pressurize the glue pot to operating pressure (typically 0.5–1.0 bar). Apply leak detection spray around the seal area. No bubble formation indicates a good seal.
9 Reinstall Cover, Remove LOTO, and Commission — Refit the access cover and guard. Remove lockout/tagout devices. Restore power. Heat glue pot to operating temperature and run a test strip to verify adhesive application uniformity.
