Purpose

The platen graphite strip provides a low‑friction backing surface for the sanding belt. Over time the strip wears, delaminates, or gets contaminated with dust and resin, causing uneven belt tracking, chatter marks, and reduced finish consistency. This procedure restores a smooth, predictable interface between belt and platen, extending belt life and ensuring repeatable sanding results.

Scope

This SOP applies to all industrial wide belt sanders with a stationary platen assembly that uses a replaceable graphite or PTFE‑impregnated fabric strip. It covers one‑person execution. Machines with segmented platens or integrated electronic tensioning require additional manufacturer‑specific steps not covered here.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the sander main disconnect before opening any guards or removing any fasteners. Verify zero energy with a rated multimeter.
  • PPEWear cut‑resistant gloves (ANSI A4 minimum), safety glasses with side shields, and a NIOSH‑approved N95 dust mask. The old graphite strip may contain abrasive dust.
  • MECThe platen assembly is heavy (15–40 kg). Use a second person or a mechanical hoist during removal and reinstallation. Never support the platen with your hands alone.
  • CHEMIsopropyl alcohol is flammable. Keep away from sparks and open flames. Use in a well‑ventilated area. Do not use solvents on the graphite strip that are not approved by the manufacturer.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Apply lockout/tagout (LOTO) to the sander main disconnect. Verify zero energy state by attempting to start the motor and measuring voltage at the supply terminals with a rated meter.
2 Open the sander hood and release belt tension using the tracking/tension handwheel. Remove the sanding belt according to the machine manual.
3 Access the platen assembly by removing the lower belt guard and any infeed/outfeed guide plates. Support the platen to prevent it from falling.
4 Remove the fasteners securing the platen (usually 4–6 hex bolts). Note the orientation and any shims. Gently lower the platen onto a clean workbench.
5 Peel away the old graphite strip. If adhesive residue remains, soften with isopropyl alcohol and scrape with a plastic scraper. Do not gouge the aluminum platen face.
6 Thoroughly clean the platen face using isopropyl alcohol and lint‑free cloths until no dust or oil remains. Allow to fully evaporate (about 2 minutes).
7 Measure the platen width and length with calipers. Cut the new graphite strip to exact length using a utility knife and straightedge. For width, match the original strip (typically 2–4 mm narrower than the belt).
8 If the adhesive is pressure‑sensitive: peel backing and apply strip to platen, starting at one end and pressing firmly with a roller to avoid air pockets. If using spread adhesive: apply a thin, even coat to both platen and strip, wait for tackiness (per adhesive instructions), then press together.
9 Trim any excess length or width with a sharp blade, following the platen edges. De‑burr the strip ends to prevent snagging.
10 Allow adhesive to cure per manufacturer's specification (typically 15–30 minutes at 20°C). Reinstall the platen using the original fasteners, tighten to the specified torque in a criss‑cross pattern. Reinstall guards and belt.
11 Remove LOTO. Restore power. Run the sander at low speed (no stock) for 2 minutes to seat the strip. Track the belt and adjust as needed. Confirm smooth, even tracking across the full platen width.
12 Record the replacement in the maintenance log: date, technician, strip part number, and any observations. Set a reminder for the next inspection at one‑half the expected service interval.
