Purpose

To establish a repeatable, verifiable method for measuring and documenting countertop overhangs (front, side, and bar/peninsula) during the final quality control check. The objective is to eliminate guesswork, reduce installation rework to <5% defect rate, and provide an auditable record of conformance to shop drawings.

Scope

This SOP applies to all laminate, solid surface, quartz, and natural stone countertop assemblies fabricated in the shop (Jobsite measuring is covered under SOP-FLD-004). It covers overhang checks for standard base cabinets, islands, breakfast bars, and scribe returns. Applies to QC Technicians, Lead Fabricators, and Installers during final sign-off.

Safety Precautions
  • LIFTUse proper lifting techniques and mechanical assistance (suction cups, cranes) when positioning large slabs on the QC table to prevent musculoskeletal injuries or dropped slabs.
  • EDGEWear cut-resistant gloves (Level 5 ANSI) when handling raw edges or profiles to avoid lacerations from sharp stone or laminate edges.
  • PPESafety glasses must be worn at all times when measuring, especially around seam areas where debris may be present.
  • LOTOEnsure the QC inspection table is stable and locked in position before placing any material on the surface.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Digital Caliper (6″ minimum)
  • Stainless Steel Rule (48″)
  • CNC Verification Template (if applicable)
  • Fabricator Pencil & QC Check Sheet
  • Torpedo Level (for confirming substrate flatness)
  • Camera for photo documentation (defects/passes)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Prepare the Assembly: Verify the countertop assembly is fully supported on a clean, flat QC table. Remove any loose debris, shims, or packing material from the bottom of the slab. Ensure the finished edge is facing the inspector.
2 Verify Reference Points: Locate the scribe line or reference mark indicating the front/side of the substrate. Using the steel rule, confirm the substrate is flush with the back/scribe edge of the countertop. Record any deviation from flush (>1/16″ requires corrective action).
3 Measure Front Overhang: Place the digital caliper at the center point of the front edge. Measure the distance from the front edge of the substrate to the finished edge of the countertop. Record the measurement. Repeat at the left and right ends (6″ from corners). All measurements must be within ±1/8″ of the shop drawing specification.
4 Measure Side Overhangs: Using the steel rule, measure the overhang on the left and right side returns. Check at the front, center, and back of the return. Document the min, max, and average. Verify for parallel consistency relative to the substrate.
5 Measure Bar/Peninsula Overhang: For islands or breakfast bars, confirm the overhang dimension specified (typically 12″-15″ for seating). Measure from the front of the substrate to the outer finished edge. Check for deflection or dip by placing the torpedo level across the overhang area. Record the gap under the level (>1/8″ indicates a dip).
6 Document & Pass/Fail: Complete the QC Check Sheet. Attach a unique serial number / barcode. If any measurement falls outside the tolerance ( > ±1/8″ standard, > ±1/16″ high-end), flag the assembly for rework. Take a photo of the failing measurement. Pass = green QC sticker placed on the bottom right corner. Fail = red deviation tag and route back to fabrication.
